Brendan Smith Suspended for 5 NHL Games, Will Start Season In Grand Rapids

Brendan Smith, heir apparent to Nick Lidstrom’s throne on the Red Wings blue line, will be suspended for the first 5 NHL games of his career for a hit on Ben Smith during a preseason game against the Chicago Blackhawks.

I don’t agree with the idea of suspending guys for regular season games because of what happened in the preseason, but at the same time it’s nice to see new disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan sending a message that headshots won’t be tolerated. Smith will need to be more careful in the future. As a guy with top pairing potential, he can’t afford to be missing games due to suspension in the future.
