Brendon Kay threw up his first 300 yard passing game of the season and matched his career high with 4 TDs, while also running for another, as Cincinnati completely dismantled UConn 41-16.
The Huskies couldn't stop Kay through the air. He completed 17-24 passes, many of them wide open. The Bearcats even scored through the air on the arm of Jordan Luallen. Out of the LuallenCat, Jordan threw a pass to a wide open Chris Moore for Moore's second TD of the game. Moore made a spectacular 1 handed catch to kick off the scoring. Blake Annen added a 41 yard TD catch, Max Morrison a 32 yarder and Anthony McClung a 28 yard score on a flip pass type of play.
The only thing the offense didn't do well was run the ball. Jordan Luallen ended up being the leading rusher in attempts with 8. Tion Green was held to 8 carries, 38 yards. RDA had 7 carries for 14 yards. He hasn't had a double digit yard run in two weeks. Hosey Williams got some action with 5 carries for 38 yards. He had a 30 yard run. Brendon Kay had 2 carries for 2 yards and the only rushing score.
The defense was pretty fantastic. Deven Drane, Howard Wilder and Mike Tyson all made interceptions ranging from great to really great. Drane batted a pass up to himself before taking it to the 2. Wilder deflected a pass, bobbled it off the UConn receiver, who was on the ground, before grabbing it. Tyson picked off a fade at the goal line, took it all the way to inside the 5 before being stripped. the ball went out of the end zone for a touchback. It was the hard knock life.
The defense had 8 sacks on the day. Silverberry Mouhon had either 4 or 3.5. Terrell Hartsfield had 2.5 or 2, Jordan Stepp had 2, Nick Temple had 1 and there was a grounding. Hartsfield played his best game as a Bearcat by far. Greg Blair didn't get a sack, but he had a couple of hurries. Cincinnati held UConn to 38 yards rushing.
This was the dominant performance I expected to see. Probably the best game UC played this season. Not the most complete effort, mainly because of the run game and the pass defense wasn't amazingly sharp, but it was clear from the beginning who was in control. This game was never in doubt. Cincinnati kicked their ass. I like it when Cincinnati kicks some ass. Let's see more of it a week from Wednesday.
Enjoy homecoming or whatever else you are doing on this Saturday. Go Bearcats.
