People are going to look at the box score and see that Dave Bush took the loss on Thursday night and immediately put the blame on him. While he did only pitch five innings and gave up nine hits and six runs, Bush showed positive signs by not walking anybody. After giving up a two-run home run to Jason Bay in the fourth, Bush appeared visibly shaken and was never able to recover.
The real cause of the loss last night was due to the lack of timely hitting. Although the team belted 14 hits, they only managed four runs and left a staggering 14 runner on base. Every player in the starting lineup had at least one hit but inning after inning saw multiple Brewers left on base.
The bats have woken up but they still need to get those hits to drive in runs. Hopefully a series against the Nationals keep the bats hot and they can finish rallies they start.
I wanted to address a couple rumors that have been making their way around the team. There is talk of deals involving Bill Hall and Tony Gwynn Jr. The Bill Hall talk would send Hall to the Indians for Paul Byrd. Byrd is a solid veteran and I think he would be a good fit for our rotation while Hall would take the place of Casey Blake at third base. The other deal involving Gwynn would see Gwynn shipped to the Padres for either Greg Maddux or Randy Wolf. Again, I’d like either veteran pitcher to come in and give some stability to our rotation and Seth McClung could move back to the bullpen. Gwynn just doesn’t appear to have a long-term future with the team even though it pains me to say that. Maddux is in the last year of his deal and I think he would be the better fit for this team especially with his brother, Mike, being theh Brewers pitching coach. What do you guys think about those deals? Would they help the team or just throw it further into chaos?
The Brewers now travel to Washington D.C. for a four-game holdiay series against the Nationals. Jeff Suppan takes the mound for the Crew tonight.
