Ben Sheets picked up his 12th win on the season Tuesday night as the Brewers destroyed the Cardinals, 12-0. Sheets pitched six shutout innings and struck out four while only allowing five hits and walking two. Brian Shouse, David Riske and Eric Gagne each pitched a scoreless inning to finish off the Cards.
The story of the night was the Brewers’ offense. The erupted for 12 runs, including seven in the ninth inning to take away any doubt of the outcome of the game.
Prince Fielder started the scoring in the first when an opposite field hit scored Ray Durham. Prince knocked in another run in the third when he grounded out to the second basemen. Ray Durham scored the team’s third run in the fifth on an Albert Pujols throwing error. Ryan Braun hit his 33rd home run of the season in the seventh to make it a 5-0 ball game. That set the stage for the massacre in the ninth and a big seven run beat down by the Brewers. The inning was highlighted by Bill Hall’s 15th home run of the season.
This was exactly the type of statement game the Brewers needed to make against the Cardinals. The Brewers needed to at least split the short, two-game series and they have done just that. Manny Parra can now pitch relaxed tonight knowing that a loss only puts the Brewers back where they started the series which is okay. Hopefully, he can pitch another gem and the Crew can expand the Wild Card lead. This may have been the Brewers best ball game of the year, at exactly the right time.
