Monday was not a good afternoon if you’re a fan of the Milwaukee Brewers. Ben Sheets left the game after five innings due to tightness in his groin and the bullpen was unable to hold the lead and the Brewers lost a tough one to the Mets, 4-2. Sheets was on his way to pitching a gem before the injury sidelined him. He tossed five scoreless innings while only giving up two hits.
The Brewers offense got on the board in the first inning after Ryan Braun knocked in JJ Hardy. Hardy tripled to left field and Braun then hit a double to score the run. The Brewers other tally came off of a Johan Santana balk in the sixth inning.
Carlos Villanueva got two outs in the sixth and Brian Shouse came on for the last out of the inning. Shouse gave up a run in the seventh. Eric Gagne pitched the eighth and lost the game for the Crew. Gagne gave up three runs on four hits by the Mets. The big blow was a Carlos Delgado two-run home run. It was Gagne’s sixth blown save of the season and his record fell to 4-3 on the season.
This was a tough one, no doubt. Milwaukee now will now have to wait on the injury report for Ben Sheets. His health is paramount to the Brewers making the playoffs and having success once they are there. Fortunately, the Cubs and Phillies both lost and the Cardinals are losing so the Brewers might not lose ground to anyone after one of the most bitter pills to swallow of the year.
Tomorrow is a new day and a new game. Manny Parra takes the mound for the Crew and looks to win his 11th game of the season.
