Brewers Make Covey Their Pick

Meet the newest Milwaukee Brewer, right hander Dylan Covey.

In all of the pre-draft mocks, I don’t think I ever remembered seeing Covey’s name connected with the Brewers — that’s just a testament to how tight-lipped the Brewers are when it comes to their draft work.  Just because it’s a name a lot of people might not recognize doesn’t mean it’s a bad pick, however.  On the contrary — this looks like it could end up being a very good pick if everything pans out.

One scouting site in particular, Baseball Beginnings seems to love him:

BBBeginnings #Brewers, to be honest, I think Covey’s CB has a chance to be the best at his position, RHP, in MLB. That is an 80 curveball. #MLBDraft

#Brewers fans, Covey is 92-94, the big CB is 84 at best. Reminds some of Schilling or Clemens. He won’t be cheap. Not a slot guy. #MLBDraft

You can take a look at all of the Baseball Beginnings scouting reports here.  Needless to say, when a guy is getting compared to Chad Billingsley and Matt Cain, I’m going to get giddy.

MLB.com of him can be seen here, along with a quick scouting report.

Covey is committed to the University of San Diego, and it may be a bit pricey to get him away from his commitment.  If he truly is one of the few pitchers in this year’s draft with top-of-the-rotation potential, it’ll be well worth it.
