Ryan Braun homered in the top of the first (his 12th of the year) to start off a day of long ball at Fenway. But, when all was said and done, the four Brewers’ homers off Boston ace Josh Beckett weren’t enough, and the Crew lost their 5th straight game to drop to 20-24 and alone in last place in the NL Central. The final tally was 11-7.
Brewers’ starter Carlos Villanueva only lasted 4 innings, allowing 5 earned runs on 5 hits and 3 walks, thanks, in part, to gopher balls served up to Dustin Pedroia and David Ortiz. His ERA jumped to 6.43 on the season.
Red Sox ace Josh Beckett did not fair much better–The Brewers tagged Beckett for four home runs on the day–Braun got a second homer in the 6th, which was followed by a Prince Fielder homer. J.J. Hardy also pounded one out in the 4th. Beckett finished with 6 ER over 7 IP to raise his ERA to 4.67…despite 6 hits and a walk, Beckett also fanned 9 Brewers’ hitters.
Mark DiFelice made his MLB debut and threw 30 pitches–23 for strikes. Unfortunately, the Red Sox hit 5 of those strikes for base hits for 3 earned runs. Salomon Torres also gave up a pair of runs in 2/3 of an inning, while Zach Jackson pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless ball in the loss.
