Before I get to the game today, I have to thank Cubs’ fans for again displaying no class and showing why no one outside of Chicago likes you people. In the bottom of the sixth on a ball hit to Ryan Braun in left field, Cubs’ “fans” threw food and drinks in Braun’s direction while he was making a throw into the infield. Typical Wrigley Field drunks, I guess. You are a classless bunch with no respect for the game or players. You sit in the bleachers for one thing, to get drunk. It’s people like you that make it so enjoyable when the Cubs choke every year.
Now that I’m off of my soapbox, what a game! There Brewers were only able to score one run in the first eight innings of the game. Ryan Braun hit his fourth home run of the season off of Carlos Zambrano in the sixth.
The Brewers trailed 3-1 in the top of the ninth when Kerry Wood and his gas can took the mound. Wood hit Craig Counsell on the elbow to start the inning. Gabe Kapler followed that up with a double that Alfonso Soriano should have caught. Jason Kendall reached on an infield single that scored Counsell. Rickie Weeks walked to load the bases. After Mike Cameron struck out, Ryan Braun came through again with an opposite-field two RBI double. The Brewers led for the first time, 4-3.
Eric Gagne came on for the save. He led off the inning with a walk to Ronny Cedeno. After striking out Geovany Soto, Gagne got Felix Pie to bounce into a game ending double play to notch his 9th save of the season. Brian Shouse got the victory, his second of the season, after only pitching 1/3 inning in the eighth.
Yovani Gallardo took a no decision but again pitched very well. He went six innings and only gave up three runs while striking out four. It was Gallardo’s third quality start in as many appearances this season. Gallardo had a scare in the fifth inning as he had to leap over Reed Johnson in order for Prince Fielder to make a play on Johnson. Gallardo landed awkwardly and it looked as if he did serious damage to his right knee. Luckily, he shook off the pain and got through another inning. He is expected to make his next start.
Corey Hart and Jason Kendall each had two hits on the day, keeping both of their averages above the .300 mark. The Brewers start off another long road trip taking two of three in Chicago and now travel to Houston.
