For years the Houston Astros were famous for their Killer B’s of Bagwell, Biggio and Berkman. On Sunday afternoon, the Brewers found their own B’s to pull out another victory: Bush, Braun and the bench.
Dave Bush went seven innings for the second time this season and he did it in consecutive starts. Early on it looked like it could be a typical Dave Bush start. He gave up a home run in the first inning to former Brewers player, Mark Loretta. Bush stayed composed and got through the first without any further damage. In fact, Bush only gave up four hits and that lone run in his seven innings. He struck out five and most importantly walked no one.
Ryan Braun continued to launch balls all over the place by hitting his 15th home run of the season. It was a two-run shot in the fourth inning. Braun also scored two runs on the day.
Ned Yost decided to go with the “B” line-up today. At first, many people were scratching their heads but by the end of the day Yost looked like a genius. Joe Dillon, Gabe Kapler, Mike Rivera, and Craig Counsell made the best of their chance to start on Sunday. They went a combined 7-15 with five RBI and three runs scored.
The Brewers have won seven of nine but still sit a full seven games back of the red hot Cubs. I do expect June to pull the Cubs back to the pack a bit. They have an amazing 26-8 record at Wrigley, but they are only 10-13 on the road. The Cubbies have only nine more home games in June but will be on the road for 17 games. The Brewers have 12 more home games in June and 13 road games. The starting pitching is rolling and the bats are now awake. I would not be surprised to see the Brewers within a few games by this time next month.
The Brewers start the last series of this home stand when the Diamondbacks come to town tomorrow night. Jeff Suppan will pitch for the Crew against former Brewer and recent Cancer survivor, Doug Davis.
