Brewers Waiting on Wolf [Latest: Wolf Will Sign]

The latest on the Randy Wolf situation: Buster Olney tells us that the Brewers are expecting an answer from Wolf and his agent sometime today Tom Haudricourt expects the deal to average about $9 million a year over 3 years. Haudricourt says there’s no indication that anyone has matched the Brewers’ offer for Wolf, which seems to be corroborated by Jon Heyman’s reports that the Mets may have moved on after getting “sticker shock.”

We’ll have more once there’s an official announcement, but for the moment I just wish those against the signing would quit comparing it to the Jeff Suppan signing. If the contract is indeed for $27 million over 3 years, Wolf will be getting less years and less money than Suppan did. I just have a hard time getting upset about nabbing the second best starter on the free agent market for under $10 million a year.

BREAKING: Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports tweeted minutes ago that Wolf will agree to become a member of the Brewers today. The deal is as expected — 3 years, just under $30 million. Great get by Doug Melvin, made even better by the fact that the Dodgers did not offer him arbitration, meaning the Brewers won’t have to surrender their 2nd-round pick to LA.

UPDATE: The deal will be for three years, worth a total of $29.75 million. There’s also a club option for a fourth year, should Wolf pitch better than expected.
