The Brewers are only one of three teams to have used only 5 starters this season…and each now has at least 12 starts banked for the season: As such, we can conclude:
1. Yovani Gallardo is the best: he’s 6-3, 2.88 with 77 K’s over 13 starts
2. Manny Parra is the worst: he’s 3-7, 6.86 with 38 BB’s–the most of any of the starters
3. Dave Bush, Jeff Suppan, and Braden Looper are all in between–and very comparable; all three have at least 3 Wins, and least 3 Losses, and ERA’s between 4.50 and 4.66
So Parra is obviously on the hot seat, and the fact that Brewers’ GM Doug Melvin sent AAA starter Mike Burns back to the minors to get some more starts is a sign that Parra may not be in the rotation much longer.
Parra’s woes have mostly been on the road–in 4 starts at home, he’s 1-2, 3.65; but in 8 starts on the road, he’s a miserable 2-5, 8.92. He’s also averaging better than 6 IP per start at home, but just over 4.75 IP/start on the road, as well as a K/9 over 9, and 8 of the 9 gopher balls he’s served up have also been on the road.
Parra gets a home start on Saturday against the White Sox, before his next road start in Detroit on Friday on an extra day’s rest. The White Sox are currently 24th in the majors in BA at .249, while the Tigers sit at 16th at .259.
My guess is that Parra will need to show something in both these starts to remain in the rotation past that. Burns’ 6-2, 2.98 ERA and 1.09 WHIP in Nashville indicates that he bears some consideration for Parra’s spot; the other four Nashville starters with at least 5 starts all have ERA’s above 4.00..something the parent club already has enough of.
