After getting swept by the Reds (I can’t even call them the “lowly” Reds, as they dominated the Brewers), the Brew Crew finds themselves at 61-66, in fourth place, and 11 games behind the Cards’ in the loss column (12 games back overall). Still, the Brewers’ PR department isn’t stating that they’ve thrown in the towel (dispite putting Trevor Hoffman, Jason Kendall, Braden Looper, Braden Looper, and Mike Cameron on waivers).
While Brewers’ GM Doug Melvin is still planning for the future, he still needs to indulge in optimistic thinking for this season…I can only guess, but here is what I’ve put together as “irrational optimism” for the remainder of the ’09 Brewers’ campaign:
What if…the Brewers sweep the Pirates this weekend, and the Cards drop 2 of 3 to the Nats? That would bring the Brew Crew to within 9 games.
What if…the Brewers could then sweep the Cards in their first series? Then 6 games out.
What if…the Brewers took 2 of 3 from the Giants at home from 9/04-9/06…and the Cards could only take one in Pittsburgh? Then just 5 games out.
What if…the Brewers then swept the Cards at home from 9/07-9/09? The Crew would be just 2 games out.
Then the Brewers could match the Redbirds game for game until the last series of the year…and a sweep of the Cards in St. Louis at the start of October would possibly net them the NL Central crown (provided the Cubs and Astros keep sucking).
Hey, it could happen…couldn’t it?
