The Brewers avoided arbitration with catcher Eric Munson, by signing him to a 1-year deal worth $525,000, then designated reliever Matt Wise for assignment, bringing their arbitration list down to 7 by Tuesday afternoon. Layne Nix also completed his 10-day window after having been designated for assignment on 12/05; in addition to Wise having been designated today, 12/11, the other outfielder acquired in the Carlos Lee trade, Kevin Mench, was designated for assignment yesterday. Wise and Mench must either be claimed off waivers and traded, released, or assigned to one of the Brewers’ minor league clubs, most likely AAA Nashville. I believe both Wise and Mench can refuse a demotion and opt to become free agents. Mench and Wise join Geoff Jenkins, Johnny Estrada, Damian Miller, Tony Graffanino and Francisco Cordero to bring the list up to 7 of players from the Brewers’ 2007 opening day roster that will not be on the Brewers’ 2008 opening day roster. More are likely to follow by tomorrow.
