Well, it almost made it ’til the end of July.
The “it” is the lead in the division, and with Thursday’s loss to the Reds in extra innings, the Brewers now have 46 losses, while the Cubs have 46 losses (the standings section of your local newspaper will still show the Brewers with a lead, but that is only because the Brewers have played two more games than the Cubs after Thursday night’s game).
Today’s 6-5 loss–the third of four to last place Cincy–came about due to Coco Cordero giving up the tying run in the 9th, and the winning run for the Reds in the 10th. Of course, that wouldn’t have happened had Dave Bush not given up 4 ER in 5.33 IP, or if the Brewers had gotten more than 3 extra-base hits. On the plus side, J.J. Hardy went 3-for-5 after having two days off, while Ryan Braun hit another homer, his 17th of the year.
Anyway, tomorrow is a new day…Claudio Vargas (8-2, 4.47) faces off against Mike Maroth (5-5, 5.82). The Brewers are 1-1 in St. Louis this year, but 3-0 against the Redbirds at home.
