Brews still tweaking 25-man before September call-ups

Ken Macha can’t wait for September 1st.

On that Tuesday, a whole assortment of the 15 players that are on the 40-man roster but not on the 25-man will be making the trip northward, including shortstop Alcides Escobar, third baseman Mat Gamel, catcher Angel Salome, and (probably) pitchers Chris Smith and Tim Dillard.

Also waiting in the wings are pitchers Seth McClung, Dave Bush and Jeff Suppan, as well as outfielder Corey Hart–all removed from the current 25-man due to injuries (or surgery in Hart’s case).

Smith just joined this group when the Brewers traded for Reds’ reliever David Weathers…Smith was sent back to Nashville, but will almost certainly be called up in September.

So the Brewers’ 25-man squad today is a hodgepodge of what their roster was on Opening Day in April–by my count, only 14 players have been on the 25-man for the entire season.

The above 9 players should join the Brewers either before or on 9/01…reinforcements of relief pitchers and pinch-hitters will be needed for the stretch run and the 16 games left against the Cardinals and Cubs…but can the patchwork Brewers hang on until then?
