Brian Elliott is once again in a tough position with the St. Louis Blues. Over the last several years, Elliott has repeatedly been pushed to the bench as the organization turns to different options in net. First was Jaroslav Halak. Next was Ryan Miller. Now it’s Jake Allen. Despite the fact Elliott is struggling to find time in the crease, he’s keeping a positive attitude and he knows that Allen is the future for the Blues.
Via the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Elliott states that he’s doing the best he can to keep pushing the organization forward. That includes a positive mentality even when things aren’t going his way. Perhaps the most noteworthy comments from Elliott relate to what he has told Allen.
“I’ve always told him, even when he came in two or three years ago, ‘You’re going to be the future of this franchise,’ so don’t worry if you have a bad game here or there. It’s about the end product. He’s showing that now, he’s trusting himself. I’ve been in that situation too, where guys have said the same thing to me and you want to pass along that wisdom.”
Though Elliott seems to always be on the outside looking in when things are going well, it’s a great situation for the Blues. The club has two viable options in net that they can roll with at any given time. Currently they’re riding the hot hand in Allen, but should he cool, Elliott can slide in and hold things down. Injuries happen and it’s comforting knowing that Elliott is maintaining a mentality which should allow him to step up should the situation present itself.
