Brian Elliott officially has the most shutouts in St. Louis Blues history. He picked up his 21st shutout as a member of the Blues in a 25-save, 4-0 win against the Calgary Flames on Tuesday night. The shutout pushed him past Jaroslav Halak and into the top spot on the franchise’s list.
Elliott commented on his achievement:
“It’s pretty cool. You don’t really think about it as it’s happening, but some of those guys on the list are pretty special names. I’m just honored to even be on that list, but it’s really about how the guys play in front of you. The last four years here for me, guys have made sacrifices by blocking shots with their faces. That’s really how those shutouts come about. We’ve had a good team game since I’ve been here, and I’m just part of it.”
It’s pretty amazing how quickly Elliott claimed the shutout title. He needed only 133 starts to pick up 21 shutouts. That’s roughly an average of one shutout every 6ish games.
While Elliott’s record is a testament to how solid he has been in net, it’s also a perfect illustration on how strong the Blues are defensively. The top-2 goaltenders on the shutout list (Elliott & Halak) skated with the Blues over the last few seasons. That’s probably not a coincidence seeing as the Blues have iced some of their best defensive squads in franchise history over that same time period.
