Last week there were rumors about the Red Sox losing faith in catcher, Jarrod Saltalamacchia, and they will look for an “upgrade”. I suggested Joe Mauer, and I wasn’t really thinking at the time, as there is no way the Red Sox could pry Mauer away from the Twins without giving up Jackie Bradley Jr. and Xander Bogaerts. With that being said, I see the Red Sox targeting former All Star, Brian McCann.
I know what you are saying. Why would the Braves give up McCann with the way they are playing right now? Two answers. McCann is a free agent at the end of the year and the Braves have Evan Gattis, a young catcher that is touted as the Braves catcher of the future. Gattis is an offensive player. He is batting .260, with seven home runs and 19 RBI. With McCann catching right now, Gattis is playing Left Field and is not expected to stay in left for long.
The Red Sox can offer the Braves a variety of young players. One name that the Red Sox could make available in a trade is Felix Doubront. They have top prospect Allen Webster, who is major league ready. Webster could eventually replace Doubront in the rotation.
If the Red Sox acquired McCann, they would have a very good chance of resigning him after the season, as they will have several contracts expiring after the season.
