The Nets’ brutal blowout loss on Friday at home against the Atlanta Hawks cost them more than just a game in the standings. Adding injury to insult, Brooklyn center Brook Lopez suffered a back strain in the game which is expected to keep him out for the next week.
Brooklyn plays the Cavaliers at Barclays tonight and head to Chicago to play the Bulls on Wednesday. Then, the Nets have another back-to-back on Friday and Saturday against the 76ers in Brooklyn and then against the Hornets in Charlotte. All four of those games are ones in which Brook is needed badly.
It’s not the news the Nets really wanted to hear right now. After a resurgent stretch in which they won three of four (victories over Philly, the Knicks and the Spurs), they got destroyed by the Hawks and now take on a Cleveland team that has won its last six games. Not good at all.
At least the injury isn’t to Brook’s very troubled right foot but that it’s a back injury is a little cause for concern. For big players like he, the back can be injured often and limits mobility and explosiveness, which Brook needs to be the dominant force inside on offense and defense.
