With Doc Rivers off to Los Angeles and the Celtics now staring a rebuild square in the pupils, the NBA’s vultures are starting to land and pick at the Boston’s former championship carcass.
Knowing full well that Kevin Garnett’s loyalty to Boston may be eroding now, teams are going to start inquiring about KG’s openness for a move. First up, the Brooklyn Nets.
A future Hall of Famer might become available, so Billy King did his due diligence and made the call.
Multiple sources told the Daily News that the Nets GM inquired about Kevin Garnett’s desire to join Deron Williams in Brooklyn, but King didn’t get an answer while uncertainty surrounds the Celtics.
I wouldn’t be shocked if KG is open to a move. I would, however, be shocked if Brooklyn was on his list of potential teams. I don’t think they scream “contender.”
It would be a great move for them, though. Brooklynites would love KG’s grit, and Kidd would love to have a guy on the floor that unequivocally has his back. Let’s not forget something about our “Ubuntu” days: Yes, it was Doc that introduced the concept, but it was KG who bought into it. It was his embracing of sacrifice and of Doc’s message that paved the way for Doc’s success. Kidd could use a good soldier like that as he makes the jump to light speed just months after his playing career ended.
And, of course, there’s the matter of what the Celtics would get in return. Is this the now infamous “HBAP” offer (Humphries, Brooks, and picks)? Is that something the Celtics would suddenly be interested in a few months after turning down that offer for Paul Pierce? Would they care about making a divisional rival better?
It’s all hard to say. But it all starts with Garnett and what he’s willing to do with the last season or two of his career. Once the Celtics know where he’s willing to go (and it can’t be the Clippers), we’ll get a better idea of what the Celtics will get in return. Until then, expect the suitors for the widow Garnett to be lined up around the block, ready to make their pitches.
