Here is the interview with Raiders 4th round pick OT Bruce Campbell immediately following his being drafted by the Raiders.
————————————-
How ya doin?
Campbell: “I’m good. How are you?”
How tough was it to wait out the last couple days?
Campbell: “Umm… It was pretty tough, but it kept me anxious, kept me real anxious to see where I was gonna go.”
Life’s funny, people thought you’d come here in first round, you came here in the 38th.
Campbell: “Really, it was strange, but at the same time I still got a chance to play football, and it’s still Oakland. So it really doesn’t even matter to me at all. I’m just happy to have the opportunity to play football.”
When did you know the Raiders were interested in you?
Campbell: “Actually, at the combine. That’s when I found out that they could have some interest in me.”
Feel like you have something to prove now?
Campbell: “Umm… I always feel like I have something to prove, ever since the combine where people, ‘oh, he’s just a workout warrior.’ I always felt like all that stuff is good, but I am actually a good football player. So now I can prove to everybody that I’m a good football player, thanks to the Raiders.”
Capable of playing on the right side, too?
Campbell: “Yes, I am”
Talked to Cable, and are you excited to play for an old O-line coach?
Campbell: “Yes, I really am, but I haven’t got a chance to talk to him much today. We had a quick interaction, but it was nothing serious. I haven’t got a chance to really talk to him.”
Spoken to DHB yet?
Campbell: “No, I haven’t talked to Darrius yet, either, but I’m pretty sure I’ll talk to him sometime today.”
Keep in contact with DHB last year?
Campbell: “Yes, yes, I actually have.”
What did he tell you about this place?
Campbell: “Umm… Really, he says it’s a good place to be. Everything’s about football there. He says it’s the real world. Says you’re gonna get exposed to the real world, and you have to work. And I was like, ‘Darrius, you know I have no problem with working.’”
Any other teams contact you leading up the fourth round?
Campbell: “No.”
Q: Great physical skill, people had concerns about consistency, how do you respond?
Campbell: I would say I was growing into it, but I feel like I have learned a lot and I have grown a lot since my last football game to now. I feel like it was more of a mental thing of just knowing stuff, too.
Q: What’s your workout regimen like?
Campbell: I work out, I’d say four times a week. I work out four times a week.
Q: Talk about you going to Raiders since combine, surprised when they took different O-lineman in third round?
Campbell: Yes, I kind of was, but at the end, I was like, hey, that’s the way the cards fell. I had no say-so, I had no choice. I know what I’m going to bring to the table when I get there, and I know I have a chip on my shoulder, so I’m just looking forward to being in Oakland.
Q: Familiar with how Raiders play, how does Maryland translate to that . . .
Campbell: To tell you the truth, I really can’t answer that.
Q: Did you do a lot of zone blocking at Maryland?
Campbell: Yes we did.
Q: Does that play to your strengths?
Campbell: Yes it does.
Q: Play much special teams at Maryland?
Campbell: No, I didn’t play special teams at all at Maryland, and it’s something I would love to do. I’d love to play special teams, I wouldn’t mind doing it.
Q: Would seem a natural for someone with your speed and power . . .
Campbell: Yes, I can agree. Just because I think, I love the game so much, I’m a team player.
Q: Living in DC area, Raiders got Jason Campbell, any thoughts about playing with him?
Campbell: Yes, I am.
