BSH Roundtable: How likely is CBJ movement in the draft order?

Another week, another roundtable. This week’s question actually came from one of our own writers, The Coach.

Alison:  While cliché, I think you are foolish if you do not try. So yes, they should explore the price of the market. I think we can safely say it wouldn’t be prudent to give up the resources for the first overall, but Laine is an attractive asset to get.

The Coach: I really think any of those top three (Matthews, Laine, and Puljujarvi) are going to be exceptional first line players. There are not many of those types available, and when they are, I think you need to go get them. As we have covered in past roundtables, the Jackets have a ton of middle six talent, but are missing that top end skill

Paul: Either one of the big three would go a long way to helping this team.

The Coach: Sticking at 4th or later and grabbing another good second line player doesn’t really move the needle for me

Paul: I don’t have ton of faith in the team picking in the second round either. Don’t have an issue moving that pick to move up for a star prospect. If they can’t move up, moving down should be considered.

The Coach: I’ve done some work on trade value in the past (and am updating for this year), but the value drop off is sharp

Alison: Ok, so what is definitely NOT something worth giving up….asset wise….

The Coach: In other words, 2nd and 3rd round picks are generally overvalued when it means moving up to the very top of the draft. Under 27 top six or top four talent. Any future 1st round pick.

Paul: Not worth giving up: Jones, Murray, Werenski, Wennberg.

Alison: Bjorkstrand? I’d add him to the list.

Paul: Any of the young guys like Rychel, Bjorkstrand, and Milano I would consider moving. I’d consider moving Bjorkstrand but I’m not 100% in favor of it. He could easily be in that untouchable group.

The Coach: I would move Milano, Rychel, and Bjorkstrand, in that order

Alison: Agree.

The Coach: Now let’s really test this: would you move the CBJ’s 1st this year + Boone Jenner?

Paul: I’d put Rychel above Milano, but agree Bjork is the last of the three to consider moving

Paul: Hmm that’s really tough Coach.

Jeremy: No

Paul: If it was next year’s first then yes.

Sam: Jeremy has said his piece. LOL.

Alison: I’d make that move for first overall. No way it happens though.

The Coach: I think I agree with Alison. Only if it lands me Matthews. It might also depend where the CBJ’s pick ends up. If it 7th + Boone for Matthews, I feel better about it than 4th + Boone for Matthews.

Alison: I think we’d be naive to think though that that is the kind of proposal that could get a top three pick. I fear the other team’s management would demand a LOT more. Which of the potential likely owners of the top pick would even consider dealing it?

The Coach: Edmonton. I think they would be best served by moving back, picking up more assets and grabbing the top defenseman.

Paul: Vancouver?

The Coach: No way Toronto moves anywhere unless they are getting a ransom in return

Alison: Yeah, Toronto is not giving it up.

Paul: Toronto did almost trade 4th overall last year, so I bet they will entertain offers for it. But yeah unless they get a mammoth offer don’t see them moving it.

Alison: So Derek, you’re saying the Jackets *should* hope Edmonton gets first overall? (again)

The Coach:  First or second. I think they may stick at #1, and take Matthews then move Nugent-Hopkins. At #2, they might be more inclined to deal back a bit, pick something up and draft defenseman. Then the Jackets can pounce on Laine

Alison: No one tell CBJ Prospects he has to root for the Oilers.
