In Clay Buchholz’s last start he had a complete game shutout going and then it all fell apart in the 9th inning. Today Buchholz would be in the same situation after 8 strong shutout innings, but then in the 9th he would be able to accomplish what he wasn’t able to 5 days ago. Clay Buchholz is definitely finishing off the season strong and hopefully giving us all hope that he’ll be a core to a strong rotation in 2015.
The game stayed tied 0-0 until the 3rd inning when the Sox cracked the scoreboard. Alex Cobb gave up a single to Bogaerts and then got to 3rd base by way of a throwing error from Cobb. Christian Vazquez was able to put the Sox on the board when he hit an RBI single to right. Sox 1-0. The Sox got another run in the 5th when Mookie Betts hit an RBI single to score Brock Holt. Sox 2-0. Cobb lasted into the 7th inning, but he was still no match for the pitching performance Buchholz was putting up on the other side.
The Sox got an insurance run that they wouldn’t need in the top of the 8th when David Ortiz hit an RBI single against Joel Peralta. Buchholz was still looking in control as he finished off the 8th inning and looked to have enough in the tank to pitch the 9th as well. Buchholz had only given up 3 hits and none of them had come home to score. He looked like that ace that we always saw glimmers of during his time with the Sox. Buchholz took the mound for the 9th and unlike last time, he had no issues and had a quick and easy 1-2-3 inning. It easily looked like the best outing to date for Buchholz in 2014.
Red Sox 3 Rays 0 BOXSCORE
