Steve Dueming, the dean of afternoon talk radio in Tampa Bay on his 620 WDAE radio station made a comment recently, that no one is calling in on the phones anymore to talk about the Bucs. The area had become apathetic. Online newspaper articles would garner 8-20 comments at best. Tampa Bay it would seem, did not realy care about its football team anymore.
But then it happened; The Bucs tanked it. Blame it on whoever you want, Coach Raheem Morris, Offensive Coordinator Greg Olsen, heck blame it on the defensive coordinator, they are pretty much dead last (oh wait, we already did). The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are in the middle of an 8 game losing streak that looks like its going to head to 10, and it has brought the Tampa Bay area back together again, and talking about football.
Yesterdays article about the Bucs lack of talent now has 44 comments and counting on the TBO.com website, and some of the comments are long enough to be considered posts themselves!
The leading top Bucs website though, JoeBucsFan.com can’t post an article about the Bucs without getting 50+ comments in a matter of hours. Posted last night about Raheem Morris post game news conference where he stated the Bucs are failing in core beliefs, it now has 101 comments, and is climbing; its only the second story down from the top!
From a Bay Area that became totally apathetic towards its football team, it took an event of these proportions to draw Tampa Bay close again, and polarize the Bucs community to come together and get interested in their team again.
Raheem Morris should not be in this position; he was an up and coming hot commodity, and this has put a damper in his career. Maybe. Morris has enough attention on him to get a shot at being a Defensive Coordinator somewhere, or assistant. I think without the added pressure of being Head Coach, he would actually be a good D.C. But this football team has quit on him, and that’s not fair. In 2009 the Bucs struggled for their coach, and it impressed ownership. That’s what will be his undoing. The Fact that the locker room is not fully in his corner anymore, and its something you never could have guessed would happen 9 weeks ago.
We may not find out the real cause of all of this mess for years to come, if at all. But this horrible Bucs team has done one good thing; It’s brought back an interest in Tampa Bay Buccaneers football to the Bay area, and thats how Tony Dungy sold out Tampa Stadium and Raymond James, something we could use in the coming years.
