This will be the 10th regular season game between the two teams, and its been a series of extremes. The Bengals took the three of the first 4 games with the lone Bucs win coming in a down 1980 year at the beginning of the season in a downpour that just came out of nowwhere. Future Buc QB Jack Thompson had a rough afternoon going 6-21 for 47 passing yards!
Loss no.1 was during the ’76 season, when every team beat up on the Bucs! Ken Anderson and Steve Spurrier combined for about 220 passing yards!! A couple years later, and Ken Anderson was still with Cincinnati, but Jack Thompson stole the show stats wise with a 30-40 316 yard performance, in a losing effort however. Maybe The Throwin Samoan’s pick for a 34 TD to open the game had something to do with that huh?!? One more loss would close out the series in he 80’s, and oh what a loss it would be. The Bucs of the 80s werent exactly world beaters and the Cincinnati Bengals were being led by Boomer Easiason, Chris Collinsworth, Sam Wyche (!) Icky Woods, etc. The score reflected it; 56 to 23 Bengals!
We’ll get into the 90s tomorrow, where the Bucs turned things around for themselves, while the Cats set themselves up for a decade of futility.
