The candidates have been mentioned, some have been interviewed. Personally, I’m done. I can live with, and can be happy with, Marty Schottenheimer.
Only two losing seasons? Only four .500 seasons? 15 Winning years with his teams? Marty Schottenheimer has won over 200 games, that is a proven coach. But he’s not 200-180 or anything like that. He is 200-126-1, thats a 61.3 winning percentage.
Thats 10-6 every year basically…and 10 wins gets you in the playoffs every year except 2010 obviously.
Which is why Marty’s teams are always in the playoffs- or the Championship game. the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have been to three NFC Championship games, with three different coaches. Schottenheimer has been to three AFC Championship games himself, with two different teams, and was 4 points away from another one in 2006, the year Marty was fired by San Diego for going 14-2 and losing to the Patriots in round two of the playoffs.
Let me repeat that, the Chargers fired Schottenheimer for going 14-2 and losing to the Patriots 24-21 in the second round of the playoffs. The Pats eventually lost to the Colts who went on to beat Chicago in the Superbowl that year.
Marty Wins. Marty Always wins.
Except Championship games it seems. But Marty didnt fumble the ball on his way into the end zone, Marty didnt give up “The Drive” either. Then he had the great luck to run into the Buffalo Bills during their 4th Super Bowl season. It’s been that way for Marty…never enough time.
The Redskins brought him in to turn around their franchise, he became the first coach to win 5 games in a row after losing 5 games in a row. Hows that for keeping a team together. The Redskins won a bunch in a row at the end to pull even at 8-8. He was fired for Steve Spurrier, and we all know how that worked out.
Then in 2006, he gets fired in San Diego for 14-2. Do you get the feeling the Bucs could use a coach like this?
Then have you seen the whose who list of assistant coaches from the Marty Tree? Its impressive like the Dungy tree, and oh, Dungy is in there too.
Bill Cowher, Tony Dungy, Herman Edwards, Cam Cameron, Gunther Cunningham, Lindy Infante, Wade Philips, Tony Sparano, and Mike McCarthy. Thats a lot of names, similar to the Dungy tree which also has Edwards, and Lovie Smith, Monte Kiffin, Rod Marinelli, Joe Barry, Mike Tomlin.
The concern is his age, at 68 he would be the oldest coach ever hired by the Bucs. Was anyone concerned about Monte Kiffin’s age? How many would like Kiffin as H.C. if he wanted to be? I rest my case!
Personally Id like to see more people get interviewed. I really like Zimmer the D.C. of the Bengals who is also in his 50s. But he’s in his 50s and still hasnt been given a Head Coaching gig.
Look maybe Marty isnt the long term answer, but tell me you dont see the Bucs going 8-8 or 9-7 next year and 10-6/11-5 the year after with some veterans added to teh team? Isn’t that exactly what we need? If he cant get us over the top, maybe his son can, or someone else.
But right now, at this moment, Marty Schottenheimer is exactly what the Tampa Bay Buccaneers need, and he should be hired on the sopt when he comes in this week.
I say tackle the guy and make him sign the contract. Just tackle him easy ok?
