MLB Commissioner Bud Selig released a statement about Armando Galarraga’s unofficial perfect game earlier today, but did not specifically mention anything about taking action on righting umpire Jim Joyce’s blown call.
While he does leave the door open for changing the blown call, it’s highly unlikely anything will be done about it. This is the same commissioner that allowed steroids to run rampant throughout baseball for over 10 years before finally taking action in the early 2000s, and even then he had other things on his mind.
The only thing working in Galarraga’s favor may be the overwhelming support from the right people. Cardinals manager Tony LaRussa is a member of the Special Committee for On-Field Matters that Selig mentioned (as is Jim Leyland). LaRussa supported overturning the call.
“I was thinking if the umpire says he made a mistake on replay, I’d call it a no-hitter, perfect game. Just scratch it. If I was Mr. Selig, in the best interest of the game. The guy got it and I’d give him his perfect game. But here again, I should just shut my mouth.”
Do the right thing Bud. Overturn the call.
