According to the Contra Costa Times, San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Mike Budenholzer is on the Golden State Warriors shortlist to be their next head coach after the Warriors recently parted ways with Keith Smart:
He declined to reveal whom the Warriors have on their shortlist, but multiple sources — from the team and in NBA circles — said they believe former Cleveland coach Mike Brown and assistant coaches Dwane Casey of Dallas, Mike Budenholzer of San Antonio and Lawrence Frank of Boston are on that list. Casey and Frank are also former NBA head coaches.
Budenholzer’s name has been brought up many times whenever a vacant coaching position is available and rightfully so. He is an assistant to Gregg Popovich, is a product of the Spurs’ system and has help guide the Spurs to NBA championships.
He is an NBA head coach in waiting and though Spurs fans would hope he takes the reigns as the Spurs head coach if and when Popovich retires, it’s only a matter of time before he will be offered a head coaching position in the NBA.
