With very few teams in desperate need of a tight end, it looks like the Buffalo Bills will have the opportunity to take the guy they want this May in the 2014 NFL draft. The position is becoming more and more important not only in fantasy football, but for teams in general. That is why Buffalo is hoping to pair up a youngster with EJ Manuel to help him complete safer passes.
Manuel was a surprise pick a season ago, as many people did not see the former Florida State quarterback as a first-round draft pick. Since they took a quarterback early last year, they are certainly not going after one early this year. Instead, they are looking to add some tools for him to utilize and perhaps up those fantasy football numbers a bit in year two. The tight end position is key for young players, because they can make safe, short and easy passes to them for some nice yardage.
There is not a ton of talent out there at tight end through the draft, but one guy who consistently gets linked to Buffalo is Eric Ebron. The tight end from North Carolina has a chance to be special, and the best part is he has a NFL body to step in and produce right away.
The biggest question is whether or not Buffalo wants to take a tight end with the #9 pick in the draft. Ebron is the only guy worthy of a pick that high, but some wonder if they could move down the draft any and grab him later on.
If tight end is not the position they want to target in the first round, there are other areas of concern for the franchise. Getting a right tackle or a safety would be great for Buffalo, as they lacked depth at either position in 2013. A right tackle could play alongside future star Cordy Glenn, and a safety could help replace recently departed Jairus Byrd.
For a young team, Buffalo has a few options to consider early on in the draft. The offense and defense needs help, and adding depth is always a focal point for them in a draft. Buffalo should be better in 2014, but a lot it will come down to the progression of a guy they took a year ago in Manuel.
