Burning River Infirmary 06/16: The saga of Nick Swisher’s Knee

hunwickmary

Nick Swisher received an injection in his left knee Monday after being placed on the disabled list the previous day with left knee inflammation. Swisher underwent surgery on both knees and started the season on the DL and did not play until May 5th.

Inflammation of the knee is also referred to as Patellar Tendonitis, or “Jumper’s Knee.” It’s  an overuse injury that  affects the tendon connecting the athlete’s kneecap to his tibia. It mostly occurs when repeated stress is placed on the patellar tendon, often the result of suddenly increasing intensity.  The stress causes tiny tears in the tendon, which the body attempts to repair. It is not clear how the injury occurred to Swisher but could probably be traced back to overuse after his surgery this past off-season.

15 days should be enough for Swisher’s knee to fully heal and would expect him back in action during the 2nd week of July.
