CAMDEN- The past few seasons have not been easy for the Camden Riversharks. The team has not made the playoffs since 2008 and has not had an above a .500 winning percentage since 2007. Despite the recent struggles, this season the team has looked good starting the year off 5-3. Friday night was no different in the team’s first game at home, with the Riversharks winning 6-2 in front of 5,314 fans.

The key to victory was starting pitcher Ryan Kulik. Kulik threw 6.1 innings with three strikeouts, one earned run, two walks and seven hits. Kulik looked dominant on the mound all night and was very solid. After coach Chris Widger pulled Kulik, the bullpen looked solid as well. Matt Gorgen came on in the ninth inning and had a one, two, three inning including two strikeouts. Gorgen appears to be the team’s closer as he did last season and with multiple MiLB teams.

For the Bridgeport Bluefish, former MLB reliever Scott Maine got the start. While he did not have his best performance, he still threw the ball nicely. Maine’s most impressive stat was his six strikeouts through 5.2 innings. Maine only was charged with one earned run, but two of the runs scored while he was on the mound because of errors on throws to first after he fielded ground balls. Those careless mistakes happened to be a momentum swing for the Riversharks.

The Riversharks continue their series against Bridgeport this weekend. Camden is currently tied with the Long Island Ducks for first place in the Liberty division.
