Junior Middleweight Bout: Erislandy Lara (19-1-2) vs. Saul Alvarez (43-1-1)
Luke Irwin: Gonna be some salty, salty folks after this one. Lara is very, very underrated. He’s only lost one fight and it was a scorecard so egregious that the judges were immediately suspended. He’s fared better against mutal opponents, including a much better performance against Austin Trout. Canelo hasn’t had a dominant win over a great boxer in their prime since…Kermit Cintron? Maybe? I think Lara gets the best of Saul, but by some random “coincidence”, Alvarez is Golden Boy Promotion’s last golden goose, and somehow…someway…*ahem*…I think he’ll get it on the judges card to much controversy. Alvarez via SD.
Interim WBA World Junior Welterweight Championship: Johan Perez (c) (19-1-1) vs. Mauricio Herrera (20-4)
Luke Irwin: There’s nothing wrong, per se, with losing to Karim Mayfield, Mike Alvarado, and Danny Garcia, but it’s a little worse when you’ve lost to them all in your last five fights. Herrera is tough, but at some point, he’s 34 and is that losing and those miles catch up to anyone. If you’re not getting stopped by Mike Alvarado, you’re not getting finished by Johan Perez, but Perez keeps his title here. Perez via UD.
WBO Bantamweight Championship: Tomoki Kameda (c) (29-0) vs. Pungluang Sor Singyu (46-2)
Luke Irwin: Most underrated fight of the weekend. Kameda is only 23, is ruthlessly efficient. Pungluang had the WBO strap, lost it to Paulus Ambunda, who then had it ripped by Kameda. So Pungluang wants his title back, and he’s finished his last three opponents in a COMBINED seven rounds to get it. But I don’t think Kameda falls. Too sharp, too quick, too precise. Kameda via UD.
Featherweight Bout: Abner Mares (26-1-1) vs. Jonathan Oquendo (24-3)
Luke Irwin: Classic low-profile bounceback fight for Mares. Mares via R5 TKO.
WBO International Junior Lightweight/NABF Junior Lightweight Championships: Francisco Vargas (c) (19-0-1) vs. Juan Manuel Lopez (34-3)
Luke Irwin: Brandon Bennett was a decent win, but it’s also Vargas’s best win, but JuanMa Lopez has seen and done it all, and just got done of a systematic destruction of Daniel Ponce De Leon. Lopez’s fight here. Lopez via R6 KO.
