Another year, another Cardinal in the Hall of Fame.
Yawn.
John Smoltz played for Atlanta and Boston before earning his HOF bonafides in St. Louis. And the shameless pandering by Cooperstown to continually ride the gravy train that is Cardinal Nation is kind of pathetic, right?

This is the part where you’re trying to remember if Smoltz actually was a Cardinal at some point. Yes. He was.
Added mid-season to bolster the 2009 Cardinals rotation, Smoltz made 7 starts going 38 innings and surrendering 36 hits, 18 earned runs and had an ERA of 4.26. He also made 1 postseason appearance against the LA Dodgers where he went 2 innings and gave up 1 run.
For all intents and purpose, John Smotlz’s career ended when Matt Holiday tried to field a fly ball with his crotch.
Let’s hope that doesn’t make it on the plaque.
(Fun fact in researching this post? GM1 of the ’09 NLDS ran 3:54 which made it the longest nine-inning postseason game in history. However, the record was broken four days later by the Rockies and Phillies in the other NLDS.)

Congratulations to John Smoltz on his HOF selection today. He may just be a footnote in Cardinals lore, but he was the rare pitcher who was successful as a starter and a reliever.
