Cardinals Losing Ground In NL Central

-1

The Cardinals staved off what could have been a disastrous weekend by beating the San Diego Padres 10-3 on Sunday afternoon.

Once again, the St. Louis professional baseball team starts the week as the leaders in the NL Central.

Will we be able to say the same thing next Monday? Probably, but…

The Cubs have gone streaking again, winning 4 in a row, while the Pirates remain hot, going 8-2 over the past 10 games to push the lead on these opponents to 6.5 and 3.5 games respectively.

It’s getting tight.

Friday, the Cardinals let a terrible 5-run 5th inning be the difference (before totally immolating late) and on Saturday completely capitulated in a rare loss that wasn’t competitive at any point.

While the Padres grabbed the most headlines last winter with their bold roster moves, John Wooden might remind us not mistake activity with achievement – the Padres aren’t a good baseball team yet tagged the Cardinals for two losses in three games.

The tricky part about getting reeled back in? The Cardinals don’t have any other options but to hope that players come back healthy sooner than later. The staff will do it’s very best to stave off the wolves, but when the Cardinals got into a shootout on FRI/SAT, all they had was their trusty switchblade.

It’s frustrating bringing a knife to gunfight.

Exacerbated by the fact the Cardinals hoped to clean up over this 7 game stretch against the Padres and Diamondbacks before getting their nemesis and a desperate Nationals team the following 6 contests.

It’s Monday, however, and it’s no fun to be all doom and gloom coming off a win…

+ Mike Wacha is now tied with MadBum and Jake Arrieta for the NL lead in wins at 15.

+ Piscotty!

The Cardinals are playing with a short roster offensively. I don’t think anyone is expecting them to light up the scoreboard like they did Sunday on the regular.

But they’ve got to take care of business against the D’Backs who are somehow only 5 games back of the Dodgers in the NL West and have won 4 games in a row.

Baseball is starting to go from interesting to real interesting.
