With the 27th pick in the first round of the 2014 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft on Thursday night, the St. Louis Cardinals took Florida State starting pitcher Luke Weaver. Weaver, a first-team All-ACC performer, turned in a solid season for FSU by posting an 8-4 record with a 2.62 ERA.
Weaver led the Seminoles in wins, innings pitched and strikeouts during the 2014 season. Despite allowing just one earned run in five innings on Saturday, the right-hander took the defeat in Florida State’s season-ending loss to Alabama.
Over his three years in Tallahassee, Weaver compiled a 16-6 record with 244 career strikeouts. Weaver becomes the third Seminole to go in the first round in four years. The last prior to Thursday was outfielder James Ramsey, who went 23rd overall, also to the Cardinals, in 2012.
Former Florida State standouts Randy Choate and Shane Robinson have each appeared in the majors for St. Louis this season. Other Seminoles are certain to be selected as the second round gets underway. The draft resumes on Friday with rounds 3-10 before it concludes with the final 30 rounds on Saturday.
