Cardinals Win Weekend Series, Lose Bad On Father’s Day

There are ‘happy flights‘ and then there are some less happy.

The Cardinals are enjoying their off day in Miami, but the stench of that 9-2 beating on Sunday afternoon is still wafting around Cardinals Nation.

After scoring 22 runs in 2 games, the Cardinals were primed to sweep the struggling Phillies. With Mike Wacha taking the rock to face hitting luminaries like Domonic Brown and Cody Asche it was all but assured.

That’s… why they play the games.

Wacha had his worst start of the season and the Cardinals staff combined to surrender 9 runs to a team that had scored 0 or 1 runs in 4 of their previous 9 games.

The offense wasn’t much better with the top 3 in the order going a combined 1-11 if you don’t count Kozma’s pinch hit. Or you can and make it 1-12.

And yes, this is an overly negative post for a June road series that was won by the Cardinals in commanding fashion. But when you have your ace going against a boondoggle of a team that’s already rolled over the previous two days… well, slam dunks aren’t easily found on an MLB schedule in June.

Got to make the gimmes.

The Cardinals still have their 6 game lead in the NL Central and the best overall record in MLB. They’re facing a Marlins team that is 5-5 in their last 10 games and sits 11 games below the .500 mark for the season. They are still without Jose Fernandez until July.

This is another winnable road series for the Cardinals.

Let’s hope they use the off day to forget about Sunday. Or maybe spend some time thinking about all the dads they hacked off during their special day.

Onward to the 50 win mark.
