Hold on to your butts, Detroit4lyfe…because I’ve got some bad news. Carlos Guillen’s pursuit of Cal Ripken’s Ironman streak suffered another setback with a knee contusion and he was placed on the disabled list. Carlos being injured is not a surprise to anyone. About a week ago, I predicted Aug. 24th for his return to the DL. The injury came on his spectacular double play turn to end the NY (AL) rally in the 9th inning Monday night. I think we all knew this was coming when he came up lame following the turn at second base.
This news means that Scrappy Doo will pop and lock back to the second base position for the Tigers. Rhymes brings a solid glove, the ability to play small ball and his Xbox 360 with the high score on DJ Hero to the big league club.
It looks increasingly apparent that the Tigers will not be able to rely on Guillen for steady playing time in the future. He kind of looks like Betty White out there from that Snickers commercial. In 2011, the Tigers are due to pay him 13 million doll hairs. This offseason the Tigers are going to have to make some very interesting decisions.
