Texas Rangers catcher Geovany Soto was arrested Wednesday and charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession.
According to The Dallas Morning News, the 2008 National League Rookie of the Year was pulled over for speeding in the Dallas suburb of Grapevine.
Friday, the injured Ranger, who is out of jail after posting $500 bond, issued a written statement.
“I was stopped by Grapevine Police on Wednesday night. I am embarrassed and would like to apologize to my family, the Rangers organization, and our fans that I was taken in on this charge,” Soto said. “Because this is an ongoing case, I cannot discuss this matter any further at this time.”
And, as is customary…there’s this.
“The Rangers organization is aware of Wednesday night’s incident involving Geovany Soto,” the team said in their own statement. “We have spoken to Geovany, and he has apologized and expressed deep embarrassment for the situation. We have notified Major League Baseball of the incident. As this is an on-going case, this is the only comment we will have at this time.”
Now, in case you were wondering, no, this isn’t the first time Soto has been busted for weed. Well, it almost isn’t.
Then a member of the Chicago Cubs, the catcher tested positive for marijuana use during the 2009 World Baseball Classic. And while Major League Baseball didn’t take any action (the most certainly will with this recent infraction), Soto was banned by the International Baseball Federation for two years
