CBJ reach agreement with Calvert for three years

Today the Columbus Blue Jackets came to an agreement with Matt Calvert on a three year deal for 6.6 million. The deal carries an AAV of 2.2 million. The breakdown is as follows:

It is a raise for the diminutive winger who has had trouble staying healthy the past two seasons – he has only played 56 games in each – but Calvert has produced a good clip during his time on the ice.

As co-editor Alison Lukan presented Calvert’s advanced stats to the general public, it begins to become very obvious why Calvert was a priority offseason signing. His ability to move up and down the lineup is a valuable piece for a team that was often injured last season and is well worth his contract.

Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch brings up a very valid point that the fourth line for this upcoming season could end up making a substantial chunk of change comparatively for their role but as we have seen in the past, players get injured and roles change. Does this put an impending cap crunch on the Jackets as soon as next season? Time will tell but we’re in the middle of a long offseason, why don’t we grab a Mojito and welcome the former Brandon Wheat King back to Columbus, eh?
