The Celtics broke a little news today by announcing they’ve extended the contracts of Danny Ainge and Brad Stevens.

The Boston Celtics announced Wednesday that they have extended the contracts of president of basketball operations, Danny Ainge, and head coach, Brad Stevens. The terms, per team policy, have not been disclosed.

Managing partner, governor and CEO Wyc Grousbeck told Celtics.com that based on Stevens’ and Ainge’s success in their respective roles, the decision to extend their contracts was made without hesitation.

“A major job of ownership is to find the right people to run the basketball side,” Grousbeck said. “We believe we have found them in Danny and Brad.”

While it’s clear this is a smart move and it’s no surprise that both men get to keep their jobs a bit longer… Stevens had just finished the first half of a six year deal.

The team didn’t disclose the contract details yet so I’m curious to see if they ripped up the next three years and gave him a new, longer deal, or if they’re extending him ON TOP OF the current three years remaining. Either way, this guy deserves a 10-year deal in my opinion, at top-dollar.

Don’t discount the timing of this either. This is also a bit of a signal to free agents and the team… the Celtics are committed to this, and you will find stability in Boston. No coaching carousel here. No weakness in the chain to exploit as a star. These are the guys. This is the team. Come here and play basketball for a real franchise.

Stay tuned for contract details… they will be interesting I’m sure.
