The Red Sox headed into Cincinnati and had Joe Kelly on the mound for the 2nd time since he was traded to the Sox. Kelly had some control issues early on and put the team in a hole, but he was able to settle down and keep the team in the game long enough for Cespedes’ big bat to turn the whole game around.
The Reds got two quick runs in the 1st inning when Kelly walked two batters and it came back to bite him. Both would end up coming home when Kelly gave up an RBI single to Frazier and then an RBI single to Mesoraco. Sox 0-2. After that Kelly really settled down and the double play was often his friend getting him out of any trouble he got himself in. The Red Sox weren’t able to get on the scoreboard until the 7th inning when Xander Bogaerts hit an RBI single to score Nava. Sox 1-2. Joe Kelly was done after 6 innings and his pitching line was 103 pitches, 6 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 3 BB and 4 Ks.
Burke Badenhop took the mound in the 7th inning and got 2 outs before John Farrell decided to go with Tommy Layne for the final out of the inning. Layne got the 3rd out and we were on to the 8th inning. Former Dodgers closer Broxton took the mound and the Sox were able to get to him and leave the inning with the lead. Brock Holt hit a single and then Yoenis Cespedes came to the plate. Broxton threw a pitch up in the general area of Cespedes’ face and sent him running out of the box and on the next pitch Cespedes hit the ball about a mile out to centerfield for the go ahead 2 run HR. Sox 3-2. Tommy Layne was still on the mound in the 8th inning and now was in line for the win. Layne got 2 outs and then Mujica was in the game to get the final out of the inning. Mujica walked Frazier, but then was able to get the 3rd out of the inning and send the game to the 9th. Koji Uehara came on in the 9th and secured the save and the win. That is 3 wins in the last 4 games. Let’s hope this trend continues.
