The NFL draft got off to a bang on Thursday night and will continue throughout the weekend. Because of the draft I won’t be posting any new content of my own until Sunday when I post my weekly “This Week In College Football” column. On Monday, I will post the 4th game in the series “15 Games That Will Decide The National Champion”. If you missed any of these posts you can check them out here: LSU/Oregon, Boise State/Georgia and FSU/Oklahoma. Since it is draft weekend, you all need to go back and take a look at some of the stuff that Kris posted over the last few weeks. Take a look at his Mock Draft Update from April 13th in which he breaks down every pick of the first round, his Top 100 Big Board (posted the day before the draft), and his Final Round 3 Mock Draft (posted the evening of the first round). Earlier this week we debuted a new writer, Jeff Contizano. Jeff’s wheelhouse is the Big Ten so look for him to provide us with some good information and views about that conference as well as college football in general. His first offering is a look at the controversial Jim Tressel which you can read here. Now that we’ve got some housekeeping out of the way let’s take a look at some interesting articles that have been posted out on the interweb recently…
– Friend of the Blog and Tweet-master Michael Felder over at In The Bleachers took a really intriguing look at college football tiers. He basically ranked every team against each other and looked at where each team ranked today. He slotted schools into four different tiers. From Tier 1, which is the big boys (Bama, Florida, LSU, Ohio State, Texas), all the way down to Tier 4 being teams that might be able to contend for their conference title every decade or so (Baylor, Duke, Indiana). Give it a read it’s good food for thought. Where does your team stand in the hierarchy of college football and do you agree with him?
– The Eye and Eer Blog, which is a combo blog of Ohio State and West Virginia in case you are keeping score, has been putting out some pretty good content during the off-season. Most recently they took a look at the Top 25 toughest back-to-back games upcoming this year. In case you are wondering, Georgia comes in at #13 with their season opening games against Boise State and South Carolina. Tom also took the time to look at the One Fatal Flaw of every BCS team. It’s a good read, especially when you want to look at head to head match-ups and see where one team might have an advantage of another. And finally, Tom also has 25 Bold Predictions for the 2011 season that are worth reading.
– A recent start-up blog, which is run by overall good dude Joe Lucia, to check out is Delany’s Dozen. As you can probably tell from the name it’s a Big Ten blog. One of the writers at this site, Matthew Yoder, has been doing a solid job with Spring Primers for each of the Big Ten teams. So if you need to catch up on your Big Ten football then head over to Delany’s Dozen. Here are the individual team links for you to check out: , Illinois Fighting Illini, Indiana Hoosiers, Iowa Hawkeyes, Michigan Wolverines, Michigan State Spartans, Minnesota Golden Gophers, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Northwestern Wildcats, Ohio State Buckeyes, Penn State Nittany Lions, Purdue Boilermakers, and Wisconsin Badgers.
– Our final external link is more of a comedic link. The Iowa State Cyclones based blog Wide Right and Natty Lite came up with an interesting take on the Big 12 schools. They compare each of the Big 12 teams to Classic Rock Bands. Good stuff.
Last but not least this month marked our one year anniversary as a blog. I just wanted to take the time to thank everyone who has written here for us, contributed on different pieces I’ve written or has just come and read what we have to say. It’s been an interesting and fun ride so far and one in which I’ve learned a lot. I look forward to the site’s continuing grow over our second year. If there is anything you would like to see on our blog or something you’d like to see more of then hit us up in the comments section or e-mail us at collegefootballzealot at gmail.com. I will be starting up our Pre-Season Previews soon. Take a look at one from last year and if you have any feedback on what you’d like to see in this years previews (or anything you don’t want to see) then feel free to let me know. One thing I will be doing different with the previews is that we will start with the smaller schools and schools that did not make our Pre-Season Top 25 and then in August we will unveil our Top 25 in the form of Previews from #25 down to #1.
