The youth movement for the Philadelphia Phillies continues, it seems. As the Phillies begin for a weekend series against the Milwaukee Brewers the team announced a roster change out of the bullpen. Chad Durbin has been released and Joe Savery has been called up from the Lehigh Valley IronPigs.

Durbin's return to Philadelphia did not go well for the 35-year old reliever. In 16 games Durbin had allowed 17 runs off 25 hits and walked nine while striking out 16. His 2.125 WHIP and 9.00 ERA was the result of struggles on the mound. Durbin appeared to have had a solid season in 2012 with the Atlanta Braves but unfortunately he hit the end of his road before reaching his return to Philadelphia.

Savery has a 3-1 record with a 4.03 ERA and 29 strikeouts to eight walks at triple A Lehigh Valley this season. Savery has already appeared in one game this season for the big club and pitched 19 games last season. The 26-year old pitcher was a first round draft pick in the Phillies in 2007 (he was originally drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2004 but did not sign) and is not eligible for arbitration until 2016 (free agency in 2019). This looks as though it could be more of a long term call-up than his previous brief stints, so hopefully this works out.
Durbin was signed in January to a two-year contract that included a $250,000 buyout for the 2014 season on top of a $1.1 million deal for 2013.
