The Colts have long had a reputation as a one-dimensional team that won only because its offense outgunned the opposition. But the Cold, Hard Football Facts say otherwise and indicate that this reputation should have died quite some time ago. The Colts over the past decade have consistently fielded some of the best defenses in history. They ranked:
- No. 7 in scoring defense in 2002
- No. 2 in scoring defense in 2005
- No. 1 in scoring defense in 2007
- No. 7 in scoring defense in 2008
- No. 1 in scoring defense in 2009
The most impressive part here in 2009 is that the Colts have overcome an onslaught of defensive injuries to field the stingiest unit in the NFL (13.5 PPG).
Uh, they’ve twice been 7th in the league in scoring D. That means they were barely one of the best defenses in the league, let alone ‘in history’. The 2002 was not good and gave up 41 points in the playoffs. The 2005 D was great, as was the 2007. The 2007 team still gave up 28 points to a banged up Chargers team because of injuries. The 2008 D was a bit of a mirage, thanks to Freeney and Mathis, but it held its own.
This 2009 unit is crazy good.
