It’s pretty safe to say that if you hit a sports bar in any of the four cities that have teams left playing baseball, the clientele is going to be rooting for their home team, right?
Unfortunately, that’s not the case with The Fifty/50 in Chicago. They’re torn. And it has nothing to do with the White Sox.
You see, upscale sports bar and restaurant counts among its investors, both Cubs owner Tom Ricketts and, one of the guys Ricketts’ team is squaring off against in the NLCS…New York Mets outfielder Curtis Granderson.
“I’m a White Sox fan but am rooting for the Cubs,” said Fifty/50 Restaurant Group operating partner Eddie Mahoney. “It’s good for baseball and the economy in Chicago and the overall vibe of the city. At the same time, it would be really great to see him win the World Series. I hope he goes five-for-five with five home runs and the Cubs win each game 6-5.”
Mahoney’s relationship with Granderson goes back to high school when the two attended Thornton Fractional South High School together and even though he’s technically a member of the enemy, The Fifty/50 is bringing back their “Grandy Triple Stack Burger” during the Cubs-Mets series.
“We’re representing both sides without being partial to the Mets,” Mahoney said. “We’re moreso partial to Curtis than the Mets. We want to show support to a guy who has supported us.”
As for me? I’ll take a Division burger with a side of Greg’s Deep Fried Cheese Curds, thankyouverymuch.
