Just under a month ago, many Philadelphia Eagles fans were left scratching their heads as Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie announced the firing of head coach Chip Kelly a week before the season finale. Despite a relatively disappointing 2015 campaign in Philadelphia, the coach known for his fast-paced offense has found a new home in northern California.
San Francisco 49ers CEO Jed York announced via Twitter that the team has selected Kelly to be their next head coach. Kelly will be just the second head coach hire in San Francisco to have previous coaching experience, and will replace Jim Tomsula, who went 5-11 during his first stint as head coach.
Earlier today, it was believed that the 49ers would choose between Kelly, and former Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan. Ultimately, they decided to give one of the most infamous coaches of 2015 another chance to bring his signature culture and disdain for time of possession to San Fran.
It was reported that Kelly’s camp initially reached out to the 49ers soon after he left Philadelphia. Kelly also has familiar connections in San Francisco as former Eagles’ vice president of player personnel Tom Gamble currently serves as the 49ers’ senior personnel executive.
Now that Kelly, who is 26-21 in the NFL, has snagged a second chance, many are left to wonder if he will continue his antics which some have praised and many have scoffed at, or if he will bring a new and improved Kelly to Levi’s Stadium. It’s now sink or swim for the former college football mastermind as the Niners hope to return to the same form they once showed a few seasons ago.
