Two interesting names popped up on waivers today: Chris Butler and Magnus Paajarvi. The news comes after a summer in which the Blues gave Paajarvi a one-year contract while Butler appeared to be a lock for the sixth or seventh defensive spot on the roster.

This doesn’t mean that Butler and Paajarvi had a bad training camp. Instead, this likely means that other players (Robby Fabbri, Colton Parayko and others) performed above expectations and may have edged out Paajarvi and Butler.
The Blues know exactly what they’d be getting from Paajarvi and other options – maybe Fabbri – provide an unknown upside which might be too good to ignore. Butler’s game can be described the same way, but it’s a bit more surprising that his name is on the wire.
It remains to be seen if either will be claimed, but this might be an early indicator that some youngsters made the roster.
