The Red Sox placed Clay Buchholz on the 15-day DL with a broken fingernail. He will (obviously) miss his start Sunday against the Milwaukee Brewers, and there’s no word who will replace him. This would have been where it would be nice to have Julian Tavarez, no? I wonder if the finger is prohibitive enough to DL him or they just want to give him a mental break.
If the Red Sox opt to hold David Pauley or Justin Masterson back from his upcoming start, one of the two could be called up.
Outfielder Jonathan Van Every has been called up to take Buchholz’s spot and provide outfield depth what with J.D. Drew and Coco Crisp not in top shape. Van Every had five homers and four steals to go along with a .278/.357/.461 line this season, a similar line to his career numbers. View the Fire Brand take when the Sox signed Van Every to a minor league deal.
Paul and Tim tackle the Buchholz/Colon options in this week’s episode of the podcast.
