On Day 2 of Phillies pitchers and catchers in spring training, Cliff Lee took to the microphone to answer questions from the media. He came prepared. As David Puddy might say, you have a question, you ask the eight ball. Lee did just that, redirecting a handful of questions about his future and the Phillies to his handy-dandy eight-ball.
It was just a few weeks ago there was a rash of forced rage over the way Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch handled media day questions. Lee may have found more humorous way to sidestep some key questions, and perhaps there will be somebody who takes offense to this (because it seems some media will get upset over the way Philly sports personalities are handling or supposedly mishandling the media lately), but Lee has always been kind of straight forward it seems. In that case, it was nice to bring a dose of humor to spring training. Everybody can use a nice laugh from time to time.
It is also a good way to avoid having to answer questions about your future with a team that is clearly in rebuilding mode. Lee has been around this game long enough to understand he could very well be traded at some point by the Phillies (again), and it cannot be easy to have to address questions along this line. Like his fellow ace in the starting rotation Cole Hamels, Lee wants to compete and have a chance to win and that may end up having to come elsewhere if the Phillies can make a good enough of a deal.
