Steve Spurrier held his weekly press conference this afternoon and addressed the Clowney situation. Apparently Clowney has a strained muscle in or around his ribs. Apparently, it's still a real injury, so Clowney is responding by seeking treatment from the medical staff twice a day. Spurrier said the announcement of the injury wasn't handled well and implied that not only could Clowney have done better but the coaches and others in the program could have as well.
None of the media directly asked, so far as I could tell from watching on twitter, whether Clowney strained his muscle on purpose so he wouldn't have to play against scary Kentucky. Also there was no word on whether Clowney had recently visited Area 51 and that was the REAL reason for his injury.
Yesterday we said it's tough to form too strong of an opinion based on the information we had at the time. We now have some more information, but at this point I doubt it will change many minds. For some anxious Gamecocks it will provide relief that the star player just has a minor injury, nothing more. For those who don't like South Carolina or Clowney it will be pure spin. "Of course he's going to say that now."
Clowney will talk today after practice, so there will be another good opportunity for all of us to exercise confirmation bias.
